![]() ![]() However, he acknowledged that the ministry is still seeking international support and funding, so while there are hopes to make considerable progress, it cannot guarantee all plans will be realised by the end of 2023. He said the idea is for the document to be the starting point for Uruguay to reach 10% of its waters under protection, by limiting activities that could harm these ecosystems. “We want to have clear rules in advance,” Amarilla said of the report and the country’s offshore exploration plans. In the document, published in December, the experts described the country’s progress on MPAs to date as “scarce”, highlighting that just 0.7% of its aquatic territory is currently protected under the National System of Protected Areas (SNAP), and that these are exclusively coastal areas. They then prepared a report which identified eight marine sites of priority for conservation. In order to establish what needs protecting from possible offshore oil activity, two environment ministry bodies began a two-year study of the country’s waters in 2020. Gerardo Amarilla, the ministry’s undersecretary, said the initiative “seems a contradiction in terms in the 21st century”, with fossil fuels something “that humanity is trying to leave in the past”. The news was poorly received by the environment ministry. In 2022, the state hydrocarbons company, ANCAP, awarded six offshore concessions to explore for oil and gas in Uruguayan waters, to private international firms including subsidiaries of Shell. Environmental organisations and experts have described this move as a contradiction, as have members of the administration itself, who argue it goes against the country’s climate commitments. If realised, these plans could see Uruguay make significant progress in marine conservation, and improve on its position as a marine protected area (MPA) laggard.īut just as it looks to boost conservation, Uruguay’s government has also authorised fossil fuel companies to explore for oil offshore, in areas that overlap with proposed MPAs. Uruguayan authorities are, however, working on plans to ensure the percentage reaches double digits soon. ![]() It would seem difficult for Uruguay to contribute its share of the global target, established at the recent COP15 biodiversity talks in Canada, of protecting 30% of the ocean by 2030. Yet this figure is currently still less than 1%. Under the UN’s Sustainable Development Goal 14, launched in 2016, the Uruguayan government committed to protecting 10% of its coastal and marine area by 2020. But, in a country often seen as an environmental “ success story” for its efforts in the energy sector, marine conservation remains a challenge. On a rating scale of A++ to D- I give it the game a A++ rating, of course it is rated M for Mature 17+ due to intense violence, blood and language. This game is fantastic, we will continue to play it. The moral of that story is this game is awesome for kids and adults, yes it involves guns and maliciously hunting dinosaurs without keeping their hides or eating them, but come on they are trying to kill you. Once it downloaded, I would say we spent about 2 hours playing together, laughing, and screaming as dinosaurs chased us through the different areas of the map trying to eat us. I started playing it to write up this review and my kids saw me playing and wanted to join so they went on their Xbox Ones andĭownloaded it to play. ![]() Second Extinction stopped them in their tracks though. My kids like to change up the games they play, from Roblox to Minecraft and Fortnite. However lately Call of Duty: Black Ops has taken up a lot of my and my kids’ time since we all usually play together as a family. I enjoy a different variety of games from action adventures to role playing games to the likes of Super Mario Brothers and Sonic the Hedgehog, let us not forget Pac-Man, Donkey Kong, and Gears of War. Each character also comes with a unique set of abilities for game play, which is typical of shooter games but in this one you get to hunt mutated dinosaurs. ![]()
